“The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” review

Runaway bestseller by writer/artist Charlie Mackesy is inspiring young & old readers across the globe.

I can’t remember when a book about kindness and friendship, created a stir like this one.

British illustrator, Charlie Mackesy’s book was published in October 2019 and instantly became a NY Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestseller.

Until very recently I couldn’t find a copy. (Thanks to Jerry at The Coffee Shelf, now I have one!)

I’m not sure if all the excitement is due to the incredible illustrations or the straightforward message of kindness and friendship.

This modern-day fable centers around a boy and three animal friends.

The beauty and simplicity of the story is each character is different and struggling with their own weakness, hurt or fears.

“I hope this book encourages you, perhaps, to live courageously with more kindness for yourself and for others. And to ask for help when you need it – which is always a brave thing to do. When I was making the book I often wondered, who on earth am I to be doing this? But as the horse says: “the truth is everyone is winging it.” So I say spread your wings and follow your dreams – this book is one of mine.”

In addition to being an inspirational and timeless story for our broken world, the art alone makes the book a worthwhile purchase. Yes, you’ll read the entire book in 10 minutes, but then you keep going back to it. I think I’ve read it half a dozen times and am obsessed with the sweet simplicity of its message.

All of the artwork is frame-worthy.

If you read it, you will want to own it. After you own it, you will want to buy it for other people.

Happy Reading!

  1. Going to add it to my collection of books for a future grandchild (someday, fingers crossed, I hope…) I love it when you review children’s books.

    • Children’s books are my favorite books to read! Have you read “Fierce” by Bea Birdsong? It’s a dream! Our counselors loved it and it won the southern book award.
